^ I'm also Air Force and have been with USAA for quite some time. My truck is insured through Progressive because it's a one ton and USAA said they don't insure it. My other vehicles and renters insurance is through USAA though and the service has been pretty good. You can't beat the military benefits.

No, the Unites States Automobile Association was originally started by some retired Army Colonels way back when for military members. They have sinced branched out into all sort of banking, financial, insurance and related services, expanding their membership eligibility base to grow the business. I'm not sure, but it sounds like from a membership eligibility update I saw recently, just about anybody can join now.
