They play the same game most ins co's do - low initial rates, slowly jacking it up over time and they will drop you in a heartbeat if you have an accident. USAA is particularly notorious for this. I have heard stories to this effect. No personal knowledge, but I do tend to believe it.

You gotta shop around and be ready to change when the time is right. I change carriers for all types of intangible services insurance, ISP, cable whatever on a regular basis. Competition keeps prices low. They do not reward loyalty, only exploit it.

They've been pretty good for me for the most part. Only issue I've had with them was when I deployed to Iraq. I suspended my policy when I was gone since my truck was in storage, when I came back and had it turned back on they screwed up. Somebody broke in my truck and I didn't find out til I went to the body shop that my rental reinbursment had been removed from my policy so if I wanted one it was comin out of pocket for me. Good thing my fianee's Dad is a truck driver so I got to use his car. The good thing about them though, a lot of companies will only do "factory replacements" on stereo equipment, I had a 7" flip up DVD player, they replaced it and re-tinted the window that was broken.

If ya look at the stickies at the top of the page you will see one that reference Military deals and specials. The last few posts on that topic are about USAA. I just called them today to get signed up myself. They're only $6 a month cheaper then my current company but if you look up there complaints filed against them and they're rating by the governing agencies they score very well in all area's.

Can't give you any personal feedback yet.

I've had them since I was 16 and no complaints at all, they have been great. Even with my somewhat horrible 10 page driving record. The one accident Ive had in my life was in a parking lot and it was disputed as to who's fault it was, but they paid me to fix my truck and fought with the other people for a year and a half until they finally won. They called me and told me I was not at fault, even though they knew all along. But all in all, I think you'll be happy. They've been good to me for 12 years now.

I've had USAA since 2001(home, and all 4 vehicles), and my rates have actually dropped over the years. A few years back my girlfriend destroyed a Dodge Stratus while driving my '96 Stroker, I gave 'em the initial report, they took care of everything quickly... and no rate increase.

I've beebn a USAA member for about 11 years, just don't use their insurance any more. They made some arbitrary changes and jacked up the premiums for my homeowners policy over the years and denied a claim for wind damage to my roof. It seemed odd to me the recent changes last year increased my premium while at the same time the assesed value of the home went down by about 20% due to the real estate slump.

Go figure. Had the auto insurance as well, never had to invoke it thankfully, but found better rates at GEICO for the same level of insurance. Just make sure you know what you're getting.

Just a question here since I have no idea how they do business yet but is it possible that there is two different branches, so to speak of USAA. One being for Military and one for the general public.
