so you are going to take a boat from Oregon to Alaska? if not then you have to go through Canada. i bet after the first 24 hours of driving you will have wished you had paid the extra $200 to take the animals on the airplane with you.....

also i just bought a potty patch... im hoping i can train my dog on that thing... cus she WILL NOT pee on concreat.... dunno why.. and the snow there is soo high... she coudlnt even get ontop of it... also... id have to put booties on her feet due to the temp... and toy breeds tend to have a small bladder..and i take her out regularly.. but i guess sometimes she just cant hold it any longer..and she will have an accident.... and she cant do that in military housing... it will cost alot of money to replace carpet... the dog is the one thats a pain in the but shes the one i CANNOT leave at home

Congrats on the assignment, Alaska rocks my wife and I are retired Air Force and spent almost 20 years up there at Eielson AFB near Fairbanks, sometimes I wounder why we left.
You can take a ferry from Washington St and get off in Ak either Valdez or Seward It is a long ride but no Canada. If you go just up to Haines Ak and get off you will still have to drive through part of Canada. Also you will have to leave your animals in your Vehicle and can only get to them twice a day. Please research this with the ferry company in case there have been changes. depending on when you are going the drive through Canada is outstanding and is even Ok in the winter. I have driven it 8 times 3 in mid winter. And even in the winter the longest distance between gas stations is less than 100 miles, almost all of the road now is paved. The first and second time we drove it was with little ones. you can plan it so you stop in a major (some not so major) city every night were there are motels and restaurants. If you do drive Buy a Mile post book, you can get one from and chain book store or here The MILEPOST: Alaska Travel Guide and Trip Planner, it is full of great info and history it also has info about the AK ferry system. Plus you can use it to travel around Alaska when you get there. Don't let any one get you down about moving up there, It's great and Anchorage and Fairbanks are as modern as any city down here. when we first got up there our friends back here thought we lived in an Igloo and used a sled-dogs to get to town. The winters are long and dark But if you get out and do stuff it's OK.
Oh by the way they cal them Snow machines up there.
I do not have any Pics of the Anchorage area available right now. I is Beautiful Mountains every where you look. Someone mentioned the mud flats earlier i would stay away very dangerous.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Good luck.

I'll take as many as I can... I dread the ride... riding in a vehicle tends to make people crabby... and for me.. as ashamed as I am to admit it... whinny.... and the quickest way to **** my husband off is to whine about something....
If he puts me on the side of the road...will one of yall come pick me up?

best advise yet!!!
it's saved my sanity many times. the latest being a 4hr trip that turned into a 12hr trip
have an 8 hour ride tonight after I get off work so i'll be on the road till at least 3am, and between metal, rock, country, 80's 90's and the comedy channels I will keep my sanity!
