no they are seperate but they're like a CB radio. they all use they same frequency so you can talk to anyone within range as long as they're on the same channel. they'll work with any radio on the FRS/GMRS frequencies as long as they're in range and on the right channel, even the little cheapy ones you can buy at wal-mart. as for being able to locate each other, the user programs this into the radio so it "knows" how to find the other radio so you don't need to buy them in a pair. they're not cheap by any means but nothing awesome is.
