i live in Nj....mostly true what you have all said....being a gas station attendant is a relatively easy job to get so your not going to have the sharpest tools in the shed pumping fuel....but to be honest, i always pump my own fuel and i dont get any flack....unless the guy is right on top of it, i just hop out swipe a card and fill away and if they give me a look, i give one right back....they normally like that their easy job just became easier........but now that i think about it, i go to the same stations most of the time, so i guess they are used to me
at least it's not as bad as mexico. I lived there for a bit and your supppose to tip your gas station attendant and not your taxi driver

I worked at a full service station a long time ago, and got quite a few tips. Usually they were in the form of peeks at girls hiking their skirts up without panties on............
From what I recall, the law in OR is basically that gas can only be pumped by a qualified and trained individual. That was fine by me when I drove through a sea of bugs and the guy was nearly puking washing my windshield.

They are hitting the big trucks I know pretty heavy with the no Idleing thing. They arent allowed to Idle at all in some states whether its 40 below or 120 outside absolutely no Ideling but I have heard that if you have a pet in the vehicle withh you then you can (thanks peta) WTF its ok if a person dies from heat stroke or freezes to death but oh no cant have the poor little dog uncomfortable. Now dont get me wrong I can see not abusing the animal but what about the poor driver that needs to crawl in the bunk for some much needed rest that cant do so comfortably and get good rest at that?
As for the pumping your own gas thing that is just frickin nuts now I can see if it was like the old service station where they actually knew what they were doing and took care and pride in a customers vehicle but these morons that they have doing it now dont give a flying f about anything but gettin a check.

Wow, I didn't know that an offical pump operator still exists.
Shell has at several selected service stations those operators
(unemployed which get a tip for their service) in Germany.
But I won't anyone let do that again- they didn't watch the pump release and made a nice dent into the sheet metal.
Thank you! No service for me, again.
But I prefer Exxon anyway...

they have the same kinda law in oregon... u cant fill up yer own tank... idk if they have the ideling law.. but they wont let you fill up your own tank because by making that law, they are preserving low paying jobs.... sadly most go to illegal aliens instead of highschool/college kids..
Actually, in Oregon and in New Jersey the law does not cover diesel vehicles....you can pump your own diesel fuel. Trucks stops, etc have no attendants at the diesel pumps.
And, as I have found from personal experience in Oregon, if the attendants are at all busy if they see Washington or Idaho plates they will tell you "on the down low" to go ahead and pump your own fuel, even if it's gasoline....(because "we know how" said one gentleman.)
Also, in 1982, Oregon voters rejected a change to the law--a change requested by service station owners--to allow self service gasoline, so the whole low paying jobs things kinda goes out the window there....
