You Know What Grinds My Gears???

The diesel world is a great place to be. There are great people who are more than willing to help eachother; there are great bench racing conversations with fellows who also have #2 running in their veins; there are competitions that are both fierce yet friendly. Yes, the diesel world is a truly awesome place to be, but it's not perfect. Naturally, there are clowns who abuse the benifits of diesel mills, just as "ricers" can ruin the car tuning world with annoying buzz mufflers and B-52 bombers wings mounted on the trunk of their FWD cars.

This thread is devoted to those irritating little things that drive you crazy about the diesel world we live in.

Please, no comments or questions, just keep the trend going and post "You know what grinds my gears?" followed by your peeve.

It's interesting to see the things that the diesel world needs to work on yet. Granted, the world will never be perfect, so why not gripe about it in the meantime and maybe get people to scratch their chins wondering if that bothers them too but they really didn't take the time to think about it. You never know, you might mention something that reminds another that they need to fix that on their own diesel rig.

You know what grinds my gears?

People who have cab or marker lights with bulbs burned out.

Begle1 02-07-2010 03:00 AM

Chevy's with only one running light.

Every douchebag who assumes that your auto is a piece of crap.

People that aren't tired of the smoke after a year or so.

People that leave their trucks running all the time just to let everybody else know how special their Diesel is. The 20 minute warm up/ 10 minute cool down/ leave it running while pumping gas/ going into the store noise pollution jackasses.

"Cummings".

Any snakesucker who feels it necessary to go out of his way and demonstrate how impeccably well educated he is by clarifying that "pumps make flow, not pressure" while you're talking about pumps that make, you know, different pressures.

Every moron that repeats the mantra "I want a Cummins with an Allison in a Ford" like it's something insightful or original.

Every moron that arrives at the conclusion that the Cummins is the best engine, the Allison is the best transmission or the Ford is the best chassis without having any kind of experience regarding the matters themselves.

Every Allison transmission KoolAid gargler who will endlessly preach about how the Allison is the best transmission ever, just because he feels smart since he knows the name of the transmission manufacturer, not realizing that his opinion would be entirely nonexistent if GM didn't put an "Allison" badge on the side of their trucks.

HEUI injection.

People who use "NOS" as a genericized term.

Obviously ignorant people, who despite having to know that they're ignorant, will nonetheless argue with you that you can't run nitrous on a Diesel and have to run propane instead.

People who think that finny leaker intercooling is a necessity.

Superduties with lift kits. Every poser on the planet spews manjuice when they see a lifted Superduty.

Superduties with lift kits... At Glamis.

Women.

Exhaust tips bigger than the exhaust pipe.

Intake modifications that don't do crap but nonetheless invoke endless holy war arguments over which is better.

Stickers advertising what crap you have on your truck or want to have on your truck if you're not being reimbursed for displaying the sticker in some manner.

Stacks. At this point, just about any pickup with stacks.

Guys who listen to anything other than mid-80's to mid-00's alternative/ pop rock with female vocalists.

Anybody who talks about how awesome some online forum discussions were when I meet them in real life.

People who constantly brag about how they "blow peoples doors off" in 14 second trucks. Anybody else notice how it tends to be the slower trucks that claim the most kills, while the really fast trucks hardly claim any "kills" at all? It's almost like people with injectors and a chip are convinced they're fast while people with built engines realize that they're not nearly fast enough? Hmm...

The phrase "rolling coal". I don't know where it came from, but it's been around forever and it's never been anything but annoying.

People whose entire understanding of Diesel engines leaves them imagining a gasoline engine with glow plugs in place of spark plugs. These people get special credit when they argue with you that your Cummins has to have glow plugs because it's a Diesel and there's no way it could light the fuel off if it doesn't have glow plugs because all Diesels have glow plugs in place of spark plugs yeah totally lets go to Glamis and spooge on lifted Superduties.

In the same vein as the "pumps make flow" jackholes, the "it's not an 'injector', it's a 'nozzle'!" jackholes. Congratulations, you have a menial education from somewhere. Unfortunately the people who taught you are morons too, sorry, but I guess it won't stop you from interjecting your arrogance into our discussion through inflexible terminology anyways.

"Ford owns Cummins" parrots; a close second to these people are the people who don't understand my intentions when I fully support the misconception just to make sure those out of the loop never get in the loop because we don't want those idiots in the loop anyways.

DTR.

1st_gen_puller 02-07-2010 10:12 AM

You know what grinds my gears??
The cops that are impartial because my truck smokes and is loud and since they cant get me for that they find every lil podunk thing they can and write me up for.. This is no lie about 5 or 6 months ago i was sitting at a stoplight behind a ''GEO METRO'' when the light turned green i blew some smoke a cop saw it and gave me a ticket for excessive acceleration.. Behind a ''GEO METRO'' lol.. i was not polite to him.. i just couldnt do it.. And i will be the first to admit that i prob do deserve it for the things that i have done and not got caught..

stolk 02-07-2010 10:18 AM

you know what grinds my gears?

Ricers. A cold air intake and fart can muffler plus all the stickers they could buy. They think they are the best mechanics in a 15 mile radius. They blab on about how there car can corner yet they still insist upon racing in a straight line between lights?????? And apparently power to weight ratio is a good defense against the fact that the car has no torque...

92typhoon937 02-07-2010 10:18 AM

people that asked me if my truck smoked or not wtf do u think lol

DuramaxakaDTD 02-07-2010 10:41 AM

OO how many people ask me just because my duramax is straight piped to show smoke

TwinStackPete379 02-07-2010 11:00 AM

You know what grinds my gears,

Stupid people that see you have stacks in your truck and think automatically that you have a 9 sec truck and you want to race stoplight to stoplight..duh

5.9Bronco...eventually 02-07-2010 11:00 AM

People that make fun of new guys. You all know everyone does it. People that are new to diesels either want huge power because they dont know torque is what youre after. The new guys that always say I want smoke and everyone just bashes that guy. Dont just bash on him. explain to the guy why smoke is bad and that big power is not usually streetable. Everyone was a new guy at one point in time, and most people like to smoke a lil every once in awhile.

but thats just me there are obviously more but thats one that gets me alot.

and rude or impolite people. what ever happened to opening the door for ladies, saying please and thank you, and a lot of other little things that people just dont do anymore

Hitting women. It is just something you dont do. I mean kidding around just playing with each other ok but if someone just hits a girl and I see it. I dont care who it is, I will knock their head off.

ok I think thats gonna be all for now

LOGANSTANFORTH 02-07-2010 12:46 PM

There has been rumors and atleast one magazine report that the Brazilian F250's will be getting a 4BT...I will look and see which magazine it was...I think its in my stack at work...

Budgreen 02-07-2010 01:06 PM

what really grinds my gears?

Reading through beagle1's post and agreeing with most of it lol

people who don't listen to common sense about diesels because their cousin's friends girlfriends uncle said otherwise.

people who just can't grasp the concept of the VE pump and recccomend upgrades for a P-pump to me constantly.

Dodgehunter84 02-07-2010 10:09 PM

you know what grinds my gears?

The person driving a hybrid that still throws trash out the window while driving the hybrid.

OneBadBia 02-08-2010 08:13 AM

People that try to race me on the street....and after 3 miles of driving right next to me while speeding up, slowing down and reving up still don't get the point......I'm not going to race you!

People that think the most expensive product is the best out there.

people that "add" their horsepower up: 300hp stock, plus my 150 hp programer makes me have 450 hp. Freakin idiot

the guy that once told me I need to buy a air/fuel ratio gauge.

I'm sure I will think of more later.

cumminspwrram59 02-08-2010 09:20 AM

what really grinds my gears

the "Cummings" there is NO G in Cummins that gets me the most:argh:

4NiKate 02-08-2010 10:21 AM

what really grinds my gears

the fact that i have questions to ask about my truck and the way certain things work, but i hesitate to ask, due to little or no respect for people (like myself) who just want to gain some knowledge in areas that may seem elematary to others,....just so maybe...maybe, i can do some of the work myself and not have to take it to my mechanic who likes to stic it to me raw.....not to mention i read 10x more threads, then i post in

Driving wise - what really grinds my gears is when some idiot pulls out of a side street and cuts you off, then proceeds to go 5 mph under the speed limit

what really grinds my gears is when i pass a cop going 10mph over the speed limit and he tears after me probably going twice as fast as i was, just to pull me over and tell me that age old bs question "do you know how fast you were going?'

yeah i do, a hell alot less than it took you to catch up to me

Hammer 02-08-2010 10:36 AM

What really grinds my gears......

-People who kiss vendors azzez to get free or reduced rate goods/parts then NOT travel/participate in any diesel event anywhere where those goods/parts can be showcased and then later sell the very same goods/parts for a profit without considering the vendor may want them back.

-Weather Forecasters....
We can land a man on the Moon and space craft on Mars but we CAN NOT give an accurate weather forecast of the track of a storm or what it involves.

dont be so shy about it. I mean if someone says shit about it. just say hey im new to diesels so screw off. I mean everyone at one point or another was a new guy so they are usually just givin you shit. I ask a lot of dumb/new guy questions and yea I post a lot also but I read quite a bit more than I post surprisingly

K50 02-08-2010 11:27 AM

What grinds my gears?

Power adders that claim huge MPG improvements.

Dealerships. I hate you all...:edit: you Calgary.

Showboating rednecks who think they're king of the world because their truck sits 8" higher than the rest of the world and they can make lots of noise. That's cool man, really it is, but don't be a moron.

Fuel stations with shit fuel....Thanks guys, you want to pay for my fuel filters?

Fuel companies...This ULSD crap really is crap. But I get the joy of figuring out how to protect my injectors with warranty approved crap on my own. Thanks for the help assholes.

16-20 year old kids who know :edit: all about handling a 7500lb truck that want to make smoke and drive like drunk morons. Your first car should not weigh more than 3000lbs until you are mature enough to handle that shit.

Captain Call 02-08-2010 11:44 AM

What grinds my gears: :dang:
These people who have a diesel pickup for one reason, status symbol. :argh: If you don't haul/work with your diesel then go buy a damn car or half ton gas truck (like a Chevy cause it gets the same MPG as my diesel). That way the demand gets back to normal and I can start paying less for fuel than gas like way back when.....before it was "cool" to have a diesel. Hell I drive my gas vehicles as much as I can people!!!!

lunk 02-08-2010 11:53 AM

when you go fishing and people look at you like your doing something wrong..... then go eat sushi.

K50 02-08-2010 03:25 PM

You know what really grinds my gears??

Shipping from the US, no Canadian/local vendors (not necessarily here, but anywhere, including ebay), higher prices in Canada, customs fees, shipping damage, no refund policy on stuff that never worked or was broken during transit, Begle1's ceaseless whinging :moon:

Captain Call 02-11-2010 03:26 PM

You know what grinds my gears:
Those people who fill up their gas burners at the only diesel pump when there's plenty of gas pumps open.

TwinStackPete379 02-11-2010 04:10 PM

You know what grinds my gears:

ok, i might make people upset and that is not the intention. so i apologize in advance.

Now this is comming from a cummins guy (me). I hate people that are so freakin brand loyal that if its not a CUMMINS its a piece of sh*t. I have respect for all diesel engines/trucks. Like when i drive my wifes Powerstroke, which i love, to town, there is always some punk a** " Know it all" That has to open his mouth telling me that Ford is junk and the engine is even more a piece of junk. and then they say SHOULD OF BOUGHT A CUMMINS.... ( even know i own one )I swear, if i had enough money id prob go to jail everytime someone tells me that. Some people need to accept the fact that there is more to pulling/racing/DD/towing then a cummins. i love my dodge but geez come on.

.............Rant over

You know what grinds my gears?

When you know exactly what's going on but don't know how to explain it and when you try to voice your angle on it you end up looking like a moron even though you knew deep down exactly what you wanted to say but fumbled over the words, then someone with a better grasp on their verbal demonstrating comes up after you, points out all the things you said wrong, unintentionally makes you look like an a$$hat and then says exactly what you were thinking only in a clearer more understandable sense. Man that sucks...and it happens to me all the time. :argh:

And when i'm driving my 30,000# work truck and people cut me off to close on the freeway.
