Nikon is a bit more pricey than Canon. With a SLR body you can attach a bigger lens anytime you feel the need to do so.
It depends on how close you want to zoom those "animals". Forget digital zoom thats crap. You need real zoom!
I have a Canon with two lenses to change: A 28-90mm for close pictures and a 75-300mm Zoom lens. Good enough for all "2 leg animals"

Ive known Whit for awhile and Ive met him, I just dont think he has the patience and time to put into learning how to effectively run an SLR camera.
Yes, an SLR will take the best pics - but theres a lot of monkeying around with it (read years) to be able to run it properly. I dont know how familiar Whit is with digital cameras but in most cases and SLR isnt the best thing for a novice (and I would guess he would be a novice) JMO.
Also, with an SLR he he will have to buy extra lenses if he wants big zoom, and its a pita changing lenses all the time.

Ah, Dr. don't make him nervous.
the SLR's have pictograms to make use easier. I don't like to take the time to work with my camera. I use the basic zone and I'm very happy with it.
You don't have be a smart *** to operate those cameras.
- Full auto mode
- portrait
- landscape
- macro
- sports
- night
The pictures declare themself as long as your name isn't Forrest Gump.
A true point is SLR's are heavy and a pain to carry around for a longer time. I have a small backpack and carry both lenses along with me. The result is worth the extra weight and the ability to change lenses.
