I read this and I thought some of you would like to hear about how brave some people really are.

NNMC Corpsman Receives Purple Heart
September 21, 2009
Navy News|by Sarah Fortney

BETHESDA, Md. - A Hospital Corpsman assigned to National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) received a Purple Heart Medal presented by the Marine officer whose live he saved when their convoy was ambushed in Afghanistan.

Holding back tears, Marine Corps Lt. Col. Ty Edwards presented Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Stephen Albright with the Purple Heart at the NNMC's Command Suite.

"You're my hero," Edwards told Albright.

On Oct. 18, 2008, Edwards and Albright were on a routine mission to deliver supplies in Afghanistan when the humvee they were riding in was ambushed. At the time, Albright was driving the vehicle and Edwards was the team commander.

During the ambush, Albright saw Edwards on the ground, not moving - he had been shot in the head. Albright attempted to push the vehicle in front of Edwards to offer protection from the heavy rounds of fire.

Albright, who was shot in his lower left leg in the attack, treated Edwards, bandaging and applying pressure on his head wound and checking him for further injuries. As he continued to monitor Edwards' vital signs, Albright constructed a makeshift litter and a C-collar to stabilize his neck during the bumpy trek to a nearby helicopter pad.

"Without him, I wouldn't be here," Edwards said.

Albright, who now works in Health Promotion Office at NNMC, was honored to accept the Purple Heart, he said, but didn't believe his war wounds constituted him receiving the award. Therefore, he chose to have Edwards present him with the award.

Edwards pinned the purple-clothed military decoration on Albright's uniform in front of family members and NNMC staff.

Albright's wife, Emily Albright, said it was difficult when he deployed to Afghanistan, but knowing he was able to use his skills to help others and make such an impact made it all worthwhile.

"I was really scared for him when we heard the news [about the ambush]," Emily said.

Over the last year, she has kept track of Edwards' progress while he was in treatment at NNMC and the Tampa Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center. She said she is amazed at how well he has recovered.

Anna Edwards, Edwards' wife, said she couldn't have asked for better treatment and support. She brought their children, Mason, 8, and Alaina, 6, and Edwards' father to watch him present the award to Albright.

"It has been a challenging and difficult year," Anna said. "It's wonderful to see them together again and to know how much [this award] means to both of them."

NNMC Commander Rear Adm. Matthew Nathan congratulated Albright on his achievement and noted that the two are now both Purple Heart recipients, having both shed blood for their country.

"They are why I stay in the service, to work alongside heroes like these two," Nathan said. "What a great opportunity it is to have you here now … God bless you for what you do."
