4th of July safety
#24
my brother had a mandatory safety briefing from the Air Force, nationwide 5 times more people are hospitalized by sparklers than by bottle rockets fortunately Nanci Pelosi has saved California from "unsafe" fireworks...we get nothing that launches/shoots, so pretty much only fountains, sparklers and spinny ground thingys.
dry ice is a lot of fun. so is oxy/acy, just have to be slightly more careful, I guess pure oxygen is insanely unstable or something. styrofoam/gas makes a nice fiery goo.

we've got nevada and arizona, too. unfortunately we also have more police than we know what to do with(and are rushing more through the academies), so there have been all kinds of fireworks task forces created and fireworks are probably our most strictly enforced border security focus...mostly because it's easier to stop an otherwise law abiding, tax paying citizen and fine them than it is to stop drug runners who shoot at cops for fun. and the sheriff, city pd and chp helicopters/airplanes flew all night, not over the city but over the country, watching for people lighting "illegal fireworks".

Actually Pure Oxygen is very stable. Acetelyne Is very very NOT stable. Anything that burns at 100% (no oxygen) is dangerous stuff. You find some old mechanics and ask them about Acetelyne Generators and see what they have to say.
The thing with oxygen is it makes stuff light off much easier. One is because a fire needs to burn oxygen NOT air. When you take the 20% or so oxygen in the air and bump it up to 80%(or higher) you don't have as much of a buffer to resist the burn(such as nitrogen which is inert) so more of the fuel can light off at once.
You know kind of like Nitrous Oxide?

learned something new. I've been taught that the nitrogen is added because pure oxygen is unstable in the presence of any sort of fuel. I didn't pay enough attention to oxygen systems in A&P school since I don't work on any pressurized aircraft. but there's all kinds of crazy regs as far as pressures and lube/grease used in aircraft oxygen systems. didn't realize it was actually the acetylene that's unstable.
