I took Tae Kwan Do in the 80's for about five years, and then SOME Brazilian Ju Jitsu while in the Marine Corps. But I pretty much gave it up after hurting my back. Now I just do basic heavy bag training since I have to be so careful.

He will do fine with Taekwondo. The most important thing (for kids especially) is the instructor. The instructor makes a big difference and will usually determine if a kid will stay involved or lose interest.

If he sticks with it, when he gets older he may want to try different styles.
