100x200 Expanded metal building
As cool as it would be to have a shop/home combo I would never do it. Having my whole house smell like the shop?Ok, I may be able to live with it but could a significant other be able to)? Getting full of fumes? I'll take the 30 second walk across the yard myself.
It seems all the steel building places around here only offer the dome style which would not give you the most space available, especially if you plan on putting more than 1 lift in. The buildings are cheap but its the concrete that takes you from behind, a 6" slab for a 100x200.....ouch....

You ever been at a manufacturing plant with offices attached to the main production floor?
Ever notice how the offices don't smell like the production floor? Also notice how the noise from the production floor isn't present in the offices?
Same thing with a shop/house combo.....it can be done, and is done everyday, it just doesn't fit into the traditional "residential" mode of construction.
If planned and designed like a commercial/industrial building, it works great with no issues.

I agree Miyagi. All you need is the full height fire wall (clean to the ceiling) with one fire rated door in it into a mud room in the living area. Have another regular exterior door into the main living area, and there should be no fumes.

For homeowner/small production use, it's actually quite affordable.
Plus, if you've ever met Logan you'll understand having a pretty smelling house to impress women is priority 100 on his list of 99 things to do before retirement.
No ****, Sherlock...that's why I said #100 on a list of 99.
