I have a half sister from my father's previous marriage. I knew about her and had a picture of her from when I was a baby, but didn't know anything about her. (When my parent's split my dad wanted nothing to do with me...) About 4 years ago, she called the local newspaper to place an ad in the Memorial Day edition of the paper. (She didn't know if we were still around, but she hoped that I (or a relative) would come back for the holiday and see the ad in the paper.) Long story short, the employee that took down the ad was friends with my grandparents and told my sister how to get in touch with them. I couldn't believe that she had found me! It was awesome!
She couldn't locate me directly because my name had been changed when my step-dad had adopted me... It's amazing how things like that work out!

Since you mentioned the story about your brother... I'll tell the story about my dad. When I was 6 months my parents split up. My dad came and picked us kids (Brother, Sister and me) up for my 4th B-Day and took us to his house for a week. The was the last time I saw him. I've been looking for him off and on with no luck. About 2 months ago I found 2 addresses that MIGHT be his. I sent a letter, calling card and picture of me to both addresses with hopes, but doubt. Sunday morning I got home from camping over the weekend and I checked my mail. There was a letter with a picture of my dad in my mailbox. I finally have contact with him after almost 24 years. Next month I will be in Fallon, NV for work and I will be trying to see my dad while I am there. He lives in Reno (about an hour away).
