Default POP goes meh turbo!

So I'm driving along today, feeling pretty happy, just bought a tool box for my truck and have a 12 pack of Sam Adams at home. I go to change lanes to pass and as I accelerate I hear a *POP* and this almost jet-like whine. I tried to accelerate and when it should be starting to kick in the turbo does nothing but whine even higher. So, it is my assumption that something is not right.

I don't have any boost gauges at this time (work in progress) so I can't tell the amount or anything I had or am getting/not getting. What would be a good course of action now, the dealer I bought it from seems unwilling to do much as I had to twist his arm basically to do the power steering hoses.

How do I get to inspect the turbo itself, gasket, rings, etc whatever it is made up of. I'd prefer to try and diagnose by myself as I have not found any reputable and decently priced diesel mechs around here. (If anyone is near Binghamton NY and knows of some, tell me).

I did google a bit - something about exhaust, or seals or rings?

TLDR: Heard a pop sound accelerating, now turbo does not work and has a high pitch (jet like) whine. When I accelerate and I know the turbo should kick in all I see is black smoke (yes its normal but not at the stage of that acceleration).

Thanks

man that sucks. i am still running the stock turbo and pushing its limits. just waiting for the day it goes pop.

pull the intake horn off and you can see the compressor wheel. to inspect it any further you will need to remove it. if you have to do that you might as well upgrade it

Take the intake off the front of the turbo and see if you have a lot of movement in the shaft.
