looking at a 2005
I've had a 2001 with a 47re and a 2004.5 with a 48re, basically the same and both aren't ''junk''. An argument can be made that they could have been more stoutly engineered but if you keep stock power, tow under 10k, keep them serviced AND put in a trans temp guage staying under 220* they are ok IMO. I put a Edge with Attitude chip in my 01 and at 93k miles the torque converter, the weak part of the transmission, started slipping during gear changes. By going to a triple disk torque converter, good shift kit,and better bands, when the stocker gets weak a good rebuild gives a great towing transmission that will hold quite a bit of power for years. My 01 47re cost $3k but was then a great transmission IMO.
People call them junk because they put a 150hp tune to a stock transmission and beat the living **** out of it until it breaks
If you have a treat it nice, service it, monitor temps then it should be fine for quite a while for you
