Default Gauge Installation

Hey everyone, I'm purchasing gauges for my 97' Powerstroke (EGT, Boost, and Trans temp). Now I know where to hook up the boost line (T- off the MAP sensor hose) and the Trans temp probe (Mag-Hytec supplies a hole), but I'd like to put my exhaust probe before the turbo. Has anyone else done this? And where did you put the probe exactly? I understand throwing it on the downpipe would be good enough, but I'd like a "true" reading.

My whole reason for posting this is because as many of you may know, very limited space and areas to probe! I'm just looking for ideas.

Drivers side exhaust manifold before the up pipe is where most everyone runs them

right before the up pipe is a flatish spot. 1/8" pipe thread. some say leave the engine running so the exhaust blows any chips out of the hole. well what if you break the drill bit, where is the bit going to go? thru the turbo. start with a small bit and gradually go up until you get to the proper size. and putting it in the DP isn't anywhere near close. it can be off up to 300* +/-. if you need i can post a picture of mine.

yea if you could post a picture that would be great, I'm looking at the spot (i think) and i just want to be sure we're looking at the same thing
so what do you suggest to keep the chips out of the turbo? take it off? or is there not enough to worry about? I know A LOT of my friends who have cummins () just drill the manifold and dont even worry about it . but then again they bought the cummins because "smoke is cool"

Just drill and tap... Gravity and the design of a drill bit take care of the chips. You'll know when they hit your face.

oh and one more quick question! I'm no machinist, but if the fitting the thermocouple uses is a 1/8th NPT, does that mean the hole i drill is a 1/8th? I know this may be common sense but can someone tell me what exactly i need drill and tap wise?

If I remember correctly, Type R drill bit... roughly 11/32"

1/8" NPT tap.

Drill bit will be smaller. It should say exactly what size to use on the tap/package.
