Default Cummins or Duramax?

Hey everyone

I am new to the site as well as to the diesel world. I am in the market currently and have been doing some research on the pros and cons between the Cummins and Duramax. I don't have a specific truck that I am looking at right now but I am probably looking for the year of '05-'08ish. Mileage I would like to see 80k or less.

Until summer rolls around again I won't be doing any towing. And once summer comes along I'll be towing some smaller trailers. Like a quad trailer and camper. I'm not so concerned with towing as I am with quality. I come from a Chevy family and my dad and uncle both have Dmax's with the allison tranny. But I have heard some things from others that the allisons aren't the best.

I know a lot comes down to preference but is there one that has a better track record and such? Thanks guys!

i dont think u can make a wrong choice. the LBZ duramax is a BEAST and the cummins....well it speaks for itself. i dont think u can go wrong with either.... think it all depends on which brand u like.... personally i like cummins.. there alot easier to work on (alot more room I6 vs V8) also i think.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll have to look more into both haha. Though having more room to work on the cummins would be nice...

i was looking into getting either a cummins or a dmax too but i think im going with the cummins, that motor is awesome, if u want a nice highway ride with a better interior go with the dmax. if u want quality under the hood where it matters most go with the cummins.

That's what I like about my dads dmax: the ride quality. I love the look of a lifted cummins though. Damn this is tough .

Cummins' engine are proven to be high mileage beast that are breed to pull. A Dmax is good option as well. It really comes down to what you like and which one you can get a better deal on IMO.

That's what I've heard about the dmax. I don't plan on upping hp for a while probably though. Thanks for the input guys. I'm leaning towards the cummins. Time to do some shopping I guess
