tach issues on 92 f250

my tach acts funny seems to be working ok cruising down the road but when i down shift it drops to 0 anyone have an idea on how to fix it or would it be easier to install a new aftermarket tach

Sounds like tach sensor mine acts the same way that is what some of the other guys on here said was the problem they are a dealer only item seen prices from 60 to 80

Remove the tach sensor and see if it is contaminated, clean it well and reinstall. Mine was giving bad readings 4 years ago, I cleaned it and it has worked fine ever since.
