'87 7.3 idi with '88 drivetrain which trans lube?

I have an '88 F-250 2wd with a 7.3 and a five speed. I've been told it should use ATF, but I'd been running 80-90 gear lube. How do I find out?

the trans gets ATF ONLY! gear oil is to thick for it and will starve it in areas for lube. get it out and refill with atf.

What he said, get that stuff out of your transmission ASAP.

You can use a Mercon 4 or 5 ATF.
