Is there such a thing as an AWD/ 4x4 TDI VW?
I need a commuter, I'd prefer to have something I can take in the rain or snow since my truck is afraid of wet.
Is there such a thing as a TDI AWD VW? Or do I have to settle on a gasoline Subaru or some nonsense?

Can a Subaru deliver 40 MPG? That's the magic number I'm looking for, since my truck gets ~20.
I'm not looking for fast, just "I can afford to commute when gas is $6 a gallon", "not sideways on the wet freeway every time I shift", "not going to take play money away from my truck" and "semi-respectable vehicle to take a girl to the movies in". Definitely not an STi, a bare-bones Subaru is something I'd like though.

Okay, fine, by "girl" I mean "suitcase" and by "movies" I mean "airport". Whatever.
If a Subaru is for a hippie, what pray tell is a Volkswagen for?
Well, if I can't get 40 MPG on an AWD vehicle, were there any years that VW had an all-mechanical VE Diesel?

well i know the pump in 2002 or something was a ve pump that was electronically monitored, but from a friends experience you leave the pump alone and it'll get great mileage, but you start trying to add fuel and it tanks the mileage

they will get you anywhere you need to go on any terrain in a hurry. i might've taken one over the side of an onramp with at least for feet of snow and drove out
