Default service 4 wheel drive light

My 02 gmc 2500 has a service 4wd light that keeps comming on about every 30 miles a when im in 4 wheel drive and it comes on it won't go into 2wd until i shut the truck off and the light goes out any ideas what the problem is thanks

My service 4wd light came on yesterday and has not gone off... the selection lights and controls on my dash quit working... i checked the fuse and the fluid level and both are fine... Anybody with any suggestions???

I narrowed mine down to the switch or t-case but i haven't been home to see what it is yet but when i do i will let u know. If uu get urs fixed let me know what ur problem was thanks man

Also might want to check the ground wire from the tranny/tcase wire harness. It should run from that harness to the frame just under the driver door. The bolt could be stripped of not getting a good ground. Easy check and fix i hope for both of you.

GMCJOE, did you ever figure this thing out???

I changed the 4wd transfer case motor on mine and she's works like new again...

Most of the time i see this light is because the dash switch has gone bad... Thats why I like our plow truck, manual shift transfer case

See and my experience has been complete opposite of yours I had a 2000 chevy 1500 and I replaced the switch and then after that went and got a junkyard motor with 60k miles on it and never had the issue again and then I changed a 06 avalanche's transfercase motor and solved the issue for that one to. I feel more commonly its the transfercase motor.
