i was cruising down hwy shifted into 5th gear let out the clutch and it was like it was in neutral. took out and pushed back into gear and held it. it did not want to grab and i could feel it popping out of gear but not grinding. pulled into gas station and shifted thru all the gears letting out the clutch in each one. seemed to be ok went to head back home and could not get into any gear at all. finially got it into 3rd gear and left it. gotta love the diesel red lights and everything in 3rd. got home and all gears seem to be working again. but not driving untill its fixed.
i am guessing but do you think its just the shifting forks wore out / broke? 198k on truck and also days before the speedometer started bouncing. related?

I bet the nut that holds 5th gear on loosened up and or fell off. it's a fairly common problem. check the second gen cummins section and there should be plenty of info on it. good luck!
