Default too much boost?

Put a #100 plate in my truck this weekend in the full foward position, then back 1/8".
Boy what a difference....played with the starwheel to clean up some of the smoke and got it pretty nice. But when i romp on it aside from my clutch saying "no" my boost gauge shoots up to 40+ psi, from what ive read this is not good for a stock turbo. From what i can tell some one installed a boost elbow on top of the afc previously. What is the proper way to lower my boost, or should i look for something that maybe someone "touched"?
Also looking at a new clutch, wondering how much more pedal effort is required for a dd setup.
