Default Boost level

To start off with I have looked and can't find answer. I have recently cut fuel plate and Installed gauges on my 94 3500 and everything is working well but the truck only makes between 20 and 24 psi boost pulling about 4k lbs up hill is this normal or am I leaking boost somewhere. Just thought it should make more and what mods should I consider doing to bring the boost numbers up. If it helps I have stock air box cut fuel plate and adjusted star wheel thanks for any help.

That's normal boost for a mostly stock truck. Cut the fuel plate to what? Did you move it or just cut it? Did you move the AFC housing? Is it a standard or automatic?

Do you have an adjustable boost elbow? Your wastegate may be opening too soon to allow for more boost. hx35 should be 28-32 depending on elevation

What kind of gauge? Where is the sensor tapped in? You should be tapping 35psi or so.

The gauge is a glow shift and it is in the port under the intake horn

You don't have an HX35 turbo and are lucky to get 24 PSI. I bet you are rolling black due to plate mods and moving plate and afc hsg all the way forward. Before adjusting either, you always scribe both BEFORE removal to know original location. These guys that remove plates completely or start hacking on them completely lose bottom end and moving AFC hsg completely lose track of what they have done. Then you start playing with starwheel and black smoke gets worse. Get an aftermarket plate that comes with a template to bolt down to hold original location. Try to find original bolt marks on both and move back to starting point. Whenever you adjust starwheel, you count clicks and document so you can go back if too much. You can get a Holset 14sq cm turbine hosing and a Cummins 28 psi Wastegate actuator for much less than Banks quickturbo turbine. And then buy a Banks 62407 plate or equal and install with template. You will be much more satisfied with air and fuel compliments that are equal with each other.

Thanks for your help someone had been in the afc before me so I don't know original location of either I did cut the plate myself to see if I liked it and may buy a plate later. I have backed off star wheel and got the truck where it don't smoke where would be a good place to get turbine housing and cummins waste gate actuator
