Default looking for cheap mods for power and mpg's

first thread so let me know if theres info on this somewhere else.
I've gotten a 12v 5.9 and im looking to up the power and mpg if possible, im also rather tight on cash so it can't harm the truck much.

I've heard of the 16* timing adj. but i don't know how to go about this. Ive also read up on modding the p-pump, theres alot of different things that are in there and i just need to know what does what, which way and how sensitive it is.

No offence if your tight on cash and the truck runs good, leave it stock and run it... Then start doing research on "AFC Mods" "Fuel Plates" Timing Advance" "KDP ie: Killer Dowl Pin" "BHAF ie:Big Honkin Airfilter" "straight pipe". There will be plenty of reading to keep you busy until you figure out what you want to do. Bombing is a slippery slope and one thing will always affect another whether its a free mod or a 4000 dollar transmission. Lots of varibles...

yep a search would be best.

Some things you can do that make a good difference would be an intake and exhaust.

What have you done already to your truck?

as far as i know the timing mod doesnt have negative effects, too much in either direction is not good though, correct?

Nothing that i know of besides a different exhaust and smaller muffler

why a smaller muffler?

to much timing and to little timing have negative effects. to little and you will lose mpg's, rpm's and power. to much timing and you risk blowing a headgasket.

the overall size is just smaller than stock, it was my grandfathers truck and its now mine, so as for the why you know as well as i do. as for the timing how much is too much. Ive been searching for how to do this but cant find much.

and right now my mothers tahoe pulls harder than the truck. im sure a little more power isnt gonna hurt it.

I'm guessing you have an auto?

Its not gonna take a ton of power to break a stock auto with a lot of miles on it

Yea it's an auto, a friend of mine might be getting rid of his standard so i might grab that. Even still though, that tranny is THAT weak? It seems it should pull harder than it does, thats at least what i would think. Im not aiming for ridiculous power right now, just a little more would be nice until i find that money tree.

well you have to remember that tranny was made for a truck that makes 160 hp and 400 ftlbs of torque to the flywheel. There no speed demons stock, and many of these mods could take out a stock auto with a good amout of miles on it

you have a point there... So then to the other side of the spectrum, what are the ways to make it more fuel efficient without a loss in power?
