im getting ready to rebuild a 5spd in a 96 cummins 4x4 its got a few mods maybe 450rwhp so im wondering what all you guys recommend doing we pull a lot with it and use it for hunting and also some daily driving. I need to know what special tools I need as well . im looking to rebuild and possibly put a valair ceramic 550hp clutch and hd hydraulics. I was looking at changing the top housing to the 4 bolt as well. any help is appreciated.

 

i took one apart not long ago. it was the first one i'd ever been into. they are pretty simple. you need a really long puller to get fifth gear off and good snap ring pliers.getting the fifth gear jam nut off maybe a chore, i drilled mine on two sides and used a chisel to break it (found this method on advanced adapters web site). they claim you need to replace it anyway. i would recommend something besides a ceramic clutch for towing.i have a southbend 450 hp ceramic in my duramax, it's terrible for backing a trailer up. it's all or nothing,engaged or disengaged,jumping, bucking, and bouncing. I would recommend a southbend organic/feramic or dual disc organic so you get a little slip.
