I have a1996 7.3 power stroke rear wheel drive. will the computer of a 4x4 work?

If its an auto and the same year it should. Best thing to do is compare the PCM codes.

Otherwise the PCM doesnt know if its a 4x4 or 4x2...

UnBolt the ebrake pedal assembly and you will see the pcm. Use a flashlight to see the code on the black plastic cap.
