Hey Soot,

Sorry for the delay, I just showed up for the day!!! To answer your question, no more purple fuel, not for alot of years now. We have red and orange now, and it is mostly dyed on site, but there has been some misuse of that system, so most is done at the plant now. The one color is for Farm fuel and the other is for Offroad.

As far as getting it over the border, it would never happen! The only thing you MIGHT be able to do, is travel up here with a slip-tank and have it filled up here and return home. The problem is that you could never qualify for a cardlock or bulk account and these are the only ways you can buy it. If you could find someone with an account up here that would sell to you, it would be the only way, and you still risk huge fines at the border if caught.

It is different now too....the discounts are not nearly what the purple discount was. I remember getting purple diesel at 11cents/litre about 10 years ago...retail today is 95cents or more!

The farm fuel today you only save about 20cents a litre, and the fine first offense is $2500, and by 3rd offense they take your truck and can fine up to 100k. They have been known to 'dip' at hockey games and shopping malls to the point that no one really tries to cheat the system any more.

For us, the best value is finding a buddy in the patch that is willing to top you up with 'rig fuel'...there are lots of stories of guys that havent paid for fuel in 10 years or more because there is little to no accounting of the fuel on a rig. I dont have one of these friends...

I just pulled a fuel report, and the average savings in 2006 is $.20/L....so about $20 per tank, not a big benefit vs. getting fined

Funny fact though, the report says 'Purple' is still available in some regions of Alberta. I havent seen it for years though!
