WVO Or Bio-D
#41
If thats your goal, the Bio-d would be most cost effective rather than converting all those different engines to run vegi.
All i have is the truck and a 2 cyl. diesel tractor. I wanted to get me a diesel genset someday and when i do, i'll probably try to make a batch of bio to keep on hand in case of an ice storm or whatever where the elec. goes down for extended periods like it does here in OK.
Murph, how long can I store a 50 gallon batch of Bio-d? Will it go bad?

If you keep it sealed in a full and air tight container, and if you keep it semi-cool and out of the sunlight, it can go for quite a long time. Think a year or maybe even more.
I'd bet it could go for 3 to 5 but its never been tested.. I just have not heard of anyone telling a story about polymerized fuel from proper storage.

Are there additives you can use to make it last longer without polymerizing? (probably didn't spelled that right)
Test...i guess i could be the first. Make up a batch or get someone to make me a batch and store it in the garage next to the genset and wait for that power outage and hope it is still good...

I have no idea on that one... I can't keep it in stock long enough to find out!
However, I think there are 2 things to be concerned about.. 1. Bacteria growth, 2. oxidation (polymerization).
To stop bacteria growth, I'm thinking a good 150 deg dry cycle to kill any microbes before you seal it up tight. There are bio-cides but I'm not sure what their effect is on long term storage.
To stop the oxidation, make sure the container is sealed tight and lacks any oxygen space inside.
That's my best "Guess"..

I've been doing alt. energy for about 25 yrs . , with in that field , there are a % of folks who seem to just jump on bandwagons , & become beileavers [ do not bother to do research or gather facts ] in this case the waste veggi oil ,
On the other hand the bio-diesel has a huge amount of data [ the WVO does not ] .
I've been running bio , b10 -b80 for over 2 yrs , have settled on about b25 to get best performance , but with excessive fuel prices I may go to b100 , then you can get into the ethanol process vs. the methanol process [ transesterfication = remove triglycerides = glycerin ] .
Here's a few links .

Maybe you could point some out , I have not seen any , that have independent reviews , outside shops / or manufactures , disassembling fuel systems & engs after use of WVO , just users , in science its called empirical evidence .
WVO can not be certified as a fuel , it does not meet the chemical requirements , between that and none of the studies mentioned above , I as a user looking for a replacement can not make a logical choice to use WVO , except in a short term emergency .
Is all I am saying is after yrs of looking at this and collecting enough info to make I have found no info that can prove or indicate that WVO is a long term viable fuel - I try to never believe anything , just understand , if I think I under stand some thing I am open to new info , but it has to be proven to me , in order to change my mind , I wish you could so that I could find an easier cheaper fuel , but with the hassle & expense of the 2 tank system filtering , warming & still not addressing PH , water , salt ect.

You definately sound much smarter than i and are probably right....just leave the WVO for me to use....
CHeck out Frybrid.com for some testing and posted results. There are plenty of Bio-D folks there too.
There are folks there who have been doing it since you was in diapers.
