I tried to find a good used tractor about 6 years ago. Around here tractors are high. I ended up buying a new Kubota L3830. I couldn't justify spending the money on a overpriced used tractor (mid 70's to early 80's going for 5 grand) that has more than likely been abused. I don't regret shucking out the extra money for a new one. I'd say you would be real hard pressed to find anything worth a crap for $2000.

I'm finding that out real fast!!! I did find a few in the $7-8k range that will fit my needs. Trying to work the angles and get a low enough payment.

I've broke the bank in the past buying older used equipment and throwing parts at it to keep it going. Dont be afraid to pay a bit more in the short run. It pays you more in the long run. Buy new(er) and buy American (doesnt have to be green paint). Stay away from the foreign machines with flashy new paint jobs. Luck to ya!

Well, I didn't get a diesel, but I did find a new, leftover '07 Simplicity Prestige 4X4, 27hp Kohler, 54" mower deck, power steering, hydro, 2yr warranty, for $6200. I'm looking for a blower, new one is $1400.

There are no "American made" compact diesel tractors (not even green)

I have a line of grounds equipment at the account I manage that is split between JD and Kubota. Both work great.

I agree with the other guys. You will likely never find much of anything, tractor-related, for $2K. Just isn't gonna happen. Even old Farmall M's are bringing more than that and they are worthless for much over pulling a wagon.

If you need 4x4, you are looking at a late model. If you just want a decent utility tractor and can live without the 4x4, check out the Allis D14-18 line. They are solid, well-built tractors that can do a lot of work. I modified a D18 with a new front pump and 2 stick control valve to have full hydraulics front and rear, then added a great loader with down pressure and a few accessories like a blade and wood splitter for the rear. Made a great unit.

You might want to look at the Yanmar. Their diesel engines are used by JD and everyone else, so their tractors are likely decent also. Price is right!

Otherwise, to find out prices on used tractors, check out Used Tractors For Sale at TractorHouse.com: John Deere Tractors, used farm tractors and farm equipment, tractors for sale, Case IH, New Holland, Agco, Kubota -- best site I've found for tractor pricing and availability in the used market.

And thank God! They'd look like GM government cars and probably be about as reliable.
