Default Newb question: Funny tach. reading.

Im new to diesels in general. This morning I was bored so I was playing around on my way to work. My truck was warmed up to normal operating temp when I did this by the way. I was on a straight stretch of road and in second gear. I pulled it up to about 2 grand held it there for a second then pushed it to the floor to see what would happen. When I did this the tach. jump up maybe 100 rpms (moved like a 16th of an inch) then came back down to 2000 and took off. Is this normal for a totally stock 97 PSD, with 3.55 out back?

I'm not sure i understand... if your at 2k and you punch it, it should run way the heck up, not just 100 rpms. Am i understanding you right?
