Default Silencer ring?

Havent really thought about it till now, but ive got some friends that were talking about removing their silencer rings on their 5.9s. Got me thinking, Is there one on my 6.7's turbo and is it much different to remove if so?

I'm not to familiar with the 6.7's.But it wouldn't hurt to pull off the turbo intake tube and take a look.

Trust me when I say it's more than you want to tackle. It's an interference fit that is pinned in the housing. It's not like the earlier turbos that have a snap ring. About all you can remove for silencers is the one in the stock intake tract.
I'm running the S&B CAI on mine and you can definitely hear the turbo howl when it's spooled. It's loud enough that I've made more than one car head for the shoulder on a four lane divided highway if I come up on their left side. It's funny... I'll come up just about even with their back bumper and then roll the throttle on so it lights just about the time I get next to their door.. Scares the crap out of them more often than not.

i thought i read on here that is was bad to remove the silencer from the tube on the 6.7's ... something about the stealer would void the warrenty for it

I don't know why the would void the warranty for pulling the silencer out of the intake tube. It says in the owners manual that it serves no purpose other than to quiet the noise down... I know what you mean though.. These days, some of the dealers are looking for any way they can to void warranties. If you're worried about that, you can always take a few minutes and put it back in before you have to take it in for warranty work/service.
Then again, you could always play dumb and act like you don't know what so called "silencer" they're talking about.

There's a few separate items in discussion here:

The silencing foam in the intake tube (between the air box and the compressor housing inlet elbow) can be removed - it's there at the NVH engineers' request.

The snap-in grid which the foam attaches to should be left in place, as it's curved exit extends into the compressor boot to improve laminar airflow around the elbow.

The "silencer ring" pinned to the compressor housing inlet must be left in place, since unlike the 5.9L silencer ring (which is only there for NVH at DC's insistence - Holset doesn't consider them to have an effect on performance), the 6.7L's HE351VE uses it as an MWE aid.

Compare it and the 5.9L's HE351W side by side and you can see how the larger VE version is designed to enhance the compressor's map width.

Of course, on the 5.9L - both the silencing baffles in the intake tube and the silencer ring can be removed, but the white plastic curved vanes must remain the 90* inlet elbow to maintain good laminar flow to the inducer.
