I live in good ole Davis county, UT and you HAVE to get it done at the county emissions center, they strap it to a dyno with a sniffer and run it wot

hmm, down here in texas if its a diesel '07 or older it doesnt have to pass emissions, just a visual inspection.

Hell, i wish I didn't have to, would be nice.
Which way advances timing, rotating pump drivers side ( clockwise from front of truck ) or passenger side?

Thanks, Just trying to figure out which way does what.
But noticed something interesting, although gauge reads close to 180 mark ( just a hair below ) computer is reading temp at 160, I know some gas engines have two separate ect sensors, do these motors or is my gauge just that far off, and at what temp do these motors go out of cold run mode? Thinking that might be my whole problem. The guy I bought it from used it for towing construction tools and equipment maybe he threw some cooler t-stats in thinking it would help.

Almost forgot, also throwing a soft code ( no mil ) p0126 temp too low for sustained operation

he probably has 180 degree t-stats. throw some 195s in there and you should get about 2-3 mpg better

Thanks crazy for the info, and woody for the advise, brought home infrared temp gun home from work and after around town driving read 160 at water pump and 140 at t-stat housing and upper radiator hose, went and bought 195 stats and swaped them, noticed a spring broken on one of the old t-stats... plan on a good drive tomorrow and getting it re sniffed
Also found a crack in coolant bottle, none in junk yards and dealer only item ( for 120 ) if anyone has one to sell let me know, patched for now

Now I'm annoyed, took it for a good drive, took it to shop feeling good, blew a god d@mm 56.1, how did it get worse, would be nice to strap to dyno and do a test and tune

Not gunna lie, found thermostat issue before i had a chance to play with the timing, also got denied on the use of a tech2 (unless i was willing to pay labor rate) was betting all my chips on it being the thermostats keeping it in cold run.
Was told of a shop locally that has lots of experience with the 6.5, gave them a call owner said he has a lot of 6.5 owners that cannot pass the 20% opacity test, told me one guy had them replace his IP and all injectors after initial fail... they still failed it at a 20.3, last resort he had him put an additive in his tank (I didn't ask what) and remove his intake tubing so it was open at the turbo for the run, passed at 19.8. Dont think i'm ambisious about passing some POS emissions test, i heard the next county over (in which my parents live) do not require diesel emissions, going to look into that.

As far as waste gate goes, seems pretty tight, might try to make one of those manual gates i saw some one on here has the build thread for.
Still going to look into why its so dirty though, i look at it as black smoke is money out of my pocket at fill up.
