I've seen that done before believe it or not, it didn't look too bad. It might look a little funny with black smoke rolling out of the top of the shell, but interesting none the less.

 

Ok, leave them in place and drill/tap a small hole in the low point. During wet weather, remove the plug and you don't have that wet soot spraying into the air. Or rivet in a flapper door at the bottom of the slash cut.
I'm assuming getting water/snow in there is your reason for possibly wanting duals. That or you're like me and can't leave anything alone!

 

I like the stacks on yer truck... I say leave em. The hole is already there...

 

Thats a tuff call.... Both are bad *** setup.. I wont go with stacks on mine i use the bed of my truck a lot. Id say if the stacks are affecting your everyday practical use and you can trade square go for it! On the other hand not sure of sound difference between stacks and mbrp exhaust.....im using 4" straight pipe noe thinking of putting muffler back in.. On factory tune sounds good but if tuner is turned up its earsplitting.

I just can't leave it alone. I could care less about the water, and definitely not doing flappers! Snow is no problem. Rain only affects it if it rains hard, and I get on it it right away. If I start it up and just drive normal it really wont spray any out, it will evaporate if I let it idle long enough. I mainly wanted to get a little bedspace back and some of the toolbox. Right now I can't even fit the toolbox over the tank either. If I lose the stacks, I can slide the fuel tank farther forward, cut the bottom of my toolbox out and slip it over the fuel tank, so it would conceal my fill point on my tank, and get me some usable toolbox space aside. Right now, the toolbox simply wont fit with the stacks as the bottom of the toolbox would hit the wheel wells...

This is true. I saved the piece I cut out though, I can tack it back in, and then have my buddy re-spray bed liner over that area, probably never even know it was gone. Not really concerned at this point, the fuel tank would cover the hole too.

The stacks are actually a little quieter than the straight pipe exhaust I had before, BUT it's a deeper tone and the noise in the cab is greatly increased. It gets LOUD inside the cab, even with the windows up. You can NOT carry on a conversation with a passenger when towing a trailer. At least not accelerating up to speed. Once up to speed it's not bad. You hit a hill or something towing something heavy, you're not talking to the passenger until you crest the hill. It sounds amazing though...

 

Yeah forgot to mention that also towing is a whole new sound thats why i think i have to put the muffler back in i like the extra whistle tho !! Maybe a mbrp dual would be an inbetween for me! Id say duals for you as well sounds like the tool box would be great as im putting one on as well. Id say the duals straight piped can get the sound up as well !!!

Having done plenty of hauling I can say I have never had or heard of death from diesel exhaust, crowding yes though. I have idled the truck at rodeos for upwards of an hour and been in the trailer/sleeper and never even smelled more than a quick whiff if the wind blew just right.
The only reason I went with the fender stack was I use my bed for its intended purpose (and think bed stacks look terrible, IMO any truck that could afford to lose a foot of bed space wasn't being used as a truck anyways and is just a commuter car with bigger tires) but I had to go up with the exhaust because I didn't like having EVERY trailer I haul with constantly soot stained. I tried dumping it out the side behind the passenger door but couldn't take the drooooooonnnnnnnneeeee

So long story slightly less long, go with duals.
