Default New here and would like some advice

Well i would like to start of by saying hello. I am new to this forum and the deisel world really. I came to choose this forum for the simple fact that every search on performance questions on the cummins led me here. Also all of the responses to the questions were educated and informative and when people have differing opinions no online brawls break out.

Anyways on to the nitty gritty, so i have a chance to buy my friends 89 dodge non i/c cummins for a good price. It is stock with only 80000 original miles with an automatic. He is not very mechanically inclined so most of the work done to the truck has been done by me. I have rotated the fuel pin, advanced the pump timing, rotated the star wheel, and adjusted the throttle linkage. When i get the truck i will be using it for everyday driving with the occasional towing. I was planning on doing the simple upgrades first such as a good set of guages, turning up the pump, a 4 in exhaust , 4 in downpipe, and injectors. After that im planning on putting on a intercooler system of some sort. From there i am wondering about what kind of injectors i should get and if i should upgrade the turbo. Ill admit that i have a heavy foot and i dont mind blowing some black smoke. So i have heard of going with a 16cm housing with a 60 mm impeller and then ive heard of going with a hx 40 turbo. Im basically lost in the whole turbo thing . Ive been cruising the forums and looking at all the posts but im getting kinda confused haha. So what im wondering is whats the best turbo upgrade for my everyday driving and occasional towing application for the budget minded person and what injectors should i get.

I here that the non-intercooled motors have better injectors than the inter-cooled ones for now i would leave those alone,I would start with installing a 3200 gov.spring and go with the HX-35w with the 12 cm housing. then after the gauges, run that fuel screw in a bit. you then should have a good all around useful truck.the HX's are fairly cheep and perform good, I ran one for awhile and it was every bit as good as my s300g (when it was a 57/65/14) and cost twice as much good luck

I have read some things saying that a 12cm isn't good for towing and that a 16 cm is a good median. Could you explain this to me a little more in depth?

The 12cm can't disipate (sp) heat quickly enough for most towing and the 14 or 16cm have been found to be a better choice.

Everything else you plan looks to be headed in the right direction as for turbo I went with a 60mm/16cm and it dropped the egts a decent amount and somehow managed to crack my IC - this was most likely caused by doing it in Feb and some not so gentle pushing and pulling.

Ok I see, and as far as the types of turbos go everybody seems to mention the hx35, hx35w and a hx 40 when budget is a concern. I assume the 40 is bigger and all but what's the benefit of running a wastegated turbo rather than one without. Your just going to wire it shut anyways aren't you?

Not nessicarily. A friend of mine has a 60mm/12cm wastegated on his '90 and he still has the wastegate useable. He has a homemade boostfooler hooked up IIRC.

I run a 62/14 and when im pulling my trailer at traveling speed it wont hold boost and the egt's run ramped, I actually had better luck with the hy-9 pulling but on top end it would still burn up, I think a 12cm housing would hold boost better under a load, but I have not tried it. from my own testing a 64/13 sounds good but I don't even know if that would work??? the part that pisses me off is i have plenty of power, I just cant use i because of the damn egt's I could floor it and it will take off good, but the pyro gauge will out run the tack
