Default Need Tach help for 1st Gen

I bought an Auto Meter 5k tach from MOPAC in town before i'd done enough research! From what I can figure out the 1st Gens (maybe all Dodge) have a 5v sine wave signal & "most" tachs require 12v. This would make sense since even though it's wired properly and I have the switches set for 6cyl mode I'm not seeing anything above 700rpm. If I switch to 4cyl I at least get to see it climb to 1200 WOT. ....

Most of you will say that I should have bought an ISSPRO and yes I probably should have...... but I didn't.....

So, does anybody know of a way to fix this and make the AutoMeter tach more accurate?

I've contacted their tech support but since it's Easter weekend I don't expect a response until next week...... I'd like to get my dash back together sooner than that! Lol

thanks guys!

Dakota digital sells a pickup that reads the teeth on flywheel/flexplate and converts to 12v signal. Look on ebay called a dls-2 as best I remember sells for around $105...Good luck

Thanks for the input guys!

There's no dial inside only a dip-switch to select the number of cylinders (4-6-8) It's an Auto Meter 2697 2 1/16" "low rev" unit.

I found the dls-2 on Ebay today but at $105 I'd like to find a cheaper solution! I've been researching adding a "W" connection to my alternator which might solve the problem.

well, problem solved! I spoke with AutoMeter tech support and they suggested a Dakota Digital DSL-2 which is a tach signal converter with a magnetic flywheel pick-up. I called Dakota to varify & then the local dealer here to order..... another $179+tax and a few more hours work and I'll be set!! An expensive little venture to say the least; tach-$125, pod-$32, DSL-2 $179 ...... you can fix anything if you just throw enough money at it!
