Default Transmission Swap Info

I'm looking to put a stick in my 93 W-250, it has the 518 auto. has anyone here put a nv4500, or a nv5600 out of the newer dodges into a first generation cummins, are adapters needed? would driveshafts need to be cut to different lenghts? etc. Please tell me all you know. Thanks.

I bought my '93 with an NV4500 already in it; haven't heard anything good about the Getrag from the 1st gens, so avoid that one. Mine does have an adapter/bellhousing; I don't believe my driveshaft was altered. I do believe you want to get a 2000 or newer NV4500 if possible, unless there's somewhere around you that can upgrade the input shaft and a few other things on the older ones. My dad has a '97 that hasn't given us any trouble, yet...
his '00 and the '00 in my '93 haven't given us any trouble, either; we've been really happy with the NV4500 gearboxes and have done some horrible things to a few of them.

I wouldn't cross out the Getrag 360. They're a really stout tranny if you run them right. The 2 things that kill them is running low on fluid and pulling a load in to high of a gear. If you keep them overfilled by a quart and keep the rpms around 1900 and up you won't have any problems. Personaly I like the way it feels shifting a getrag better than a 4500. And you don't have to worry about the nut falling off of 5th gear.
