Default Want to Kill Drone

I must be getting old...I deleted the muffler and kept the kitty (about 5 years ago) on my '04.5 Dodge CTD. I love the sound, but the drone and interior noise is getting on my nerves anymore. What mufflers will kill the drone and interior noise but keep the Cummins sound / tone? I really don't see the need to do an entire exhaust system being that it is already 4". Just want to cut my straight pipe out and put a performance muffler in.

For getting rid of drone put on a resonator. A muffler will generally affect the sound, but drone not as much, while a resonator will help kill drone, but not hurt sound outside the truck.

Be glad you have a 4" and not a 5" if you're trying to get it quieter

MBRP makes one and also sells it through one of our vendors, Thoroughbred diesel.

MBRP Diesel Resonator - Stainless Steel or Aluminized

You might post a topic over in the Price Quote section for a 4" resonator and see who all sells them, and for what price.

Default 2004.5 drone

I have a 04.5 Cummins that I bought with a 5 inch exhaust system on it. Several attempts were made before I bought it to quiet it down. The truck is LOUD period. I asked a friend who has a dyno if he ever had done a dyno test with/without a 5 inch cat. He told me that he had not. I got to thinking about a 5 inch system on a 360 cubic inch engine. The WHY question kept coming up in my mind. I noticed that there is a real lag from the time the smoke exits the pipe after a nudge on the accelerator. This just means that the pipe is huge for the amount of exhaust gas coming out of the turbo. It is basically open to the atmosphere.

At any rate, after I installed a Suncoast torque converter, the drone really got bad. The new converter hooks up way earlier, and with more of a bite. So I decided to install a 5 inch Magnaflo cat ahead of a 5 x 50 inch Donaldson muffler. It is VERY nice. It is not stock quiet. It has a nice little growl to it and NO drone. and last but not least, if I go to a State that looks for cats n stuff, I will be ready for the emissions guy.

2004.5 Dodge 2500 4x4, Cummins 600, Auto, Shorty, 3:73 5 inch, Stock Tires and Wheels, Banks 6 Shooter/SL, Modified Transmission, 3 disc Suncoast, Fass

Aero Exhaust makes a good resonator. I put their 4040XL on my '08 and it sounds great.

Cost is just under $200.

Have any of you ever opened up a resonator? there's a reason people take 'em off...They're pretty restrictive. Me? I'd get a decent muffler, of a straight flow design.
