Default Engine Oil Bypas Filter

Here's one way to do it and expand your sump capacity by a full gallon:

http://stuff.is-a-geek.net/PhotoAlbu...ics/CRD_39.JPG

It's a 6um filter on a 1 1/2-16 head made for various Caterpillar applications. I had previously installed a smaller 12um and Motorguard combination on the frame rail under the passenger side door, but it only expanded the sump capacity by about a quart and a half. I think this solution will work better on the Cummins by increasing the capacity up to a full gallon as well as having a much higher flow rate. I haven't actually measured the flow rate, but running at 50-60psi with a restrictor off the pump housing at 3/32", my guess would be it should turn over the whole sump at least once every 10-20 minutes.

Anyone know where there's a chart or calculator that gives flow rates for different fluids at various temperatures?

Is it common to use hose clamps on oil supply lines?

This is an absolute nono. Don't forget there is no restriction in the line to the filter. It will take less than 20 seconds to spill your oil out. You are lucky if you recognize it.

It is difficult to calculate flow rates because oil pressure depends on engine rpm.

If you increase the flow rate through a bypass filter, you automaticlly decrease oil pressure and flow in the engine. That has to be avoided. Bypass flow of 10% is calculated to avoid oil shortage in the engine.

In this application, yes. Hydraulic hose manufactured by Gates, Weatherhead and others is designed for clamping at pressures up 300psi.

I guess you didn't read the post very carefully: "at 50-60psi with a restrictor off the pump housing at 3/32", my guess..."

Uh, actually no it's not difficult to calculate. It just depends on engine rpm. That's why I was looking for a chart or calculator.

That would be incorrect, in this example. The Cummins lube system is engineered to supply much more volume than is needed for the stock setup. That's one reason why an additional port is supplied on the filter housing to support twins, etc.

This setup has zero affect on oil pressure, as checked with a mechanical gauge. Been running it for about three months. Gee whiz, I wonder why my engine hasn't seized yet?

Why not just get a GCF, 1u filtration and 1.5 gallons of added capacity...

FWIW, I use BRASS fittings with hydraulic hose and hose clamps, over 100k of use...

Just curious what the micron rating is on this unit?

The WIx replacement I'll use next time is 5um.

I have a GC-01 on my 1st Gen. It is an awesome filter, just a PITA to change. I'm only changing it every 2 years. Still wanted to get away from that ordeal with a solution that gives a good sump expansion. Do you know how much those things cost?

Sorry, but he's not doing a very good job of it, then. Post spin and/or B$ and I will call you out in a heartbeat. I have no tolerance for that cr@p.

I find it no more difficult to change than any other bypass filter...I bought mine used for $100, they are out there.

I change the element every 10k, and change the oil every 20k...still have lots of life left.

I also recently found that Viva (by Kleenex) to be a very comparable to toilet paper...
