Do you want to go with a full intake or just kill the box and slap on a filter?
The filter part is easy. Remove the box and get a 4" PVC pipe about 4 inches long and use it to connect your stock air tube to the new filter. You'll want to make something to keep it from resting on the bottom of the air filter and a heat shield would help you out too.

Got a filter to put on the tube...

This is a 4.5" flange like the stock. If you end up with a 4", there are other options listed there.
