Default rebuilding my own 47RE

My 2003 ram 2500 diesel has an additional transmission cooler located on the drivers side of the cab attached to the back of the block, it also uses the block coolant to transfer the heat from the tranny fluid,as well as the one at the front that is air cooled. is this one really needed as i do not tow and only do long highway trips with my truck.

I spoke with a transmission shop on rebuilding the transmission and they said they modify the pump, remove the check valve from the oil coolant line and remove the thermostatic valve from the cooler. I know of the check valve but have no idea what modifications to the oil pump is possible or where the thermostat is for the transmission that they would be talking about, has anybody heard of this.
