Default Silencer Ring

Ok I am going to admit right off I am STILL GREEN on most of the Diesel info. I bought a 98 2500 4x4 24Valve with a 5speed manual tranny and stock 3:55 gears. A friend of mine right off told me to take the silencer ring out of the turbo and told me it would help my mileage. SO I did and immediately it DROPPED by 2-3mpg. I have to keep a mileage log driving to and from work so I know exactly what I am driving at each fill up. I left it off for almost 3 weeks and put it back on and the next fuel up it went up 2mpg. With it off I was seeing 14-16 mpg averages with it in I am getting 16-18.5 mpg. Question I have is how many saw an increase and how many saw a decrease when removing the ring?

thats not what killed your milage that will have absolutely no effect at all on your milage, the only thing that may have effected your milage was you rompin on it to hear that turbo sing when it was out, other then that the silencer ring in or out will not effect your milage at all

I wont deny I did try it out to hear the turbo at first, but I drive 30 miles one way to work and I set my speed usually once I get going and that was the only thing that I had changed. And before I took it out and once I put it back in the mileage was consistantly higher then with it missing. I couldnt understand why else it went down.

Agree, the ring missing should do nothing to the mileage.

my mpg i don't believe changed or at least i didn't notice.

i would think the ring would direct air flow to the turbo.
with that theory it would kinda make sense if mpg went down.

I'm currently getting close to 19-20 MPG with all my bombs I've got...
