Trans Choices
I have a dying 47RE. Starts out in 1st and will not upshift, or it will start out in 3rd and shifts to 4th no problem. Trans shop said "rebuild" and wants $2,850 for a stock rebuild.
So my choices: stock rebuild (ripoff), do a performance rebuild myself ($2,250-$3,000), or swap in an Allison 1000. (Money is a limiting factor, otherwise I'd just buy a complete bolt-in performance unit!) Budget is $3,000.
I know almost nothing about the Allison 1000. If I go with a swap, what years are my best choices without buying a new trans? How durable is this trans in stock form, and how long will it hold up to 400-450 HP? Will I actually get better MPG with the 5-speed at 65 mph?
Truck is a 2002 Dodge 3500, Cummins 24V, 4X4, 3.55 gears. Mods so far: 4" turbo-back, K&N filter.

With as many on here that need this topic addressed, you would think that there would be a ready made reply. I'm in almost the same boat, mine isn't having any problems shifting... yet. But I was thinking of doing a valve body and torque converter and just adjust the bands. I thought about checking the suppliers and finding out other fixes that have been found and the cost.

I know your budget is $3000, but a bolt in unit from many of the vendors on this site will run $3800 shipped to your door. An Allison unit will cost more than that, and you'll probably have to end up adding an extra computer just to run it. My personal preference is a Goerend Heavy Duty unit. Here is a link...Goerend Transmission Incorporated I know this is not the only company on here that builds a solid transmission for a competitive price, but they are who I used and the phone service and trans operation has been second to none.

Hate to sound like a dumb new guy, but when it comes to Dodges and Dodge transmissions............... Hey, I'm just askin'.
What's the difference between the 47RE amd the 48RE?? I'm already familiar with GM transmissions (love that Allison), know darn little about Dorfs and absolutely nothing about Chrysler products.
THNX........

basiclly the only difference with the 47re- 48re are the clutch packs. the valve body is also a little different but very similer. the 47re has clutches as follows clutch steel clutch steel ect. the 48re has a 2 sided clutch on one side steel on the other. so they face one to the other no steels in between them. its the same case, same pump, same gears. as a matter of fact most builders now when they build a 48re use the 47re clutches in the performance trannys. the 47/48re trannys are tough as nails contrarry to popular beleif. most fail from neglect not from a defect. the allison swap is a waste of money inho. diesel power has a nice article in this months mag about just how stong they are getting to be now. suncoast is building a 47re thats been tested to over 1800 hp. and they are replacing allisons in the dmaxs with them because they perform that much better and are stronger. as someone who has built them all the allison is mostly talk they are strong but the have more flaws than you would think. and cost 10 times the money to fix. all that being said call suncoast for a tranny and converter.
