Look on summit, they have bungs to weld into the exhaust and it creates a vaccum, pulling the gasses out and the hot exhauast gases burn up the oil vapor. When i had my 6.9 I ran one of these setups, with a Goldenrod fuel/water seperator housing in between engine and exhaust, minus filter and filled up with steel wool. Caught alot of the oil, and the vaccum to suck out the gasses is beneficial to the engine. Plus the goldenrod housing is clear to see oil level.

 

I have one just like this but without the chrome breather on the top. And I just welded it into my downpipe at a 45. Seems to do a really good job so far.

Have either of you two put a vacuum gauge on to see if its actually pulling from the VC? I've often wondered how well those setups worked, but can never find someone who's tested it after installing it. The normal mechanical pumps will pull between 8-15 inches. Any more and you run into oiling issues IIRC (its been a LONG time since I've had my hands on one of these).

 

I never did, and sold my 6.9 3 years ago to pay for college, and every day regret it. But with the truck running you could see the gasses flowing through the filter housing.

 

i saw a setup with breathers on the valve covers on a 12v. seems like a good idea to let out the gasses and not the oil or at least as much oil.

Here is a link to an alternate way to route it. it also gives a good reason to reroute it if you do any steep hill descents. I did mine with heater hose however, not PVC. Mopar1973Man's Dodge Cummins Articles - Crankcase Vent Modification

 

Only issue with heater hose is diesel oil causes it to break down. Depending on how bad it breaks down, could stop up the hose. Then it pushes out a crankshaft seal.

 

what kind of hose would be better in that setup? im trying to find something of the sort to use with my valve cover breather setup. i dont really want to buy a ton of those little filters. 9.99 a piece is retarded if you ask me. so i figure i can route them all together and use 1 filter. thought about using all hard lines but i think it would make pulling the valve covers a pita not to mention the alignment of all of them.
