HX35/40 vs. stock HX35 Turbo Lag.
I run my truck daily as a commuter vehicle, and I know that I need a bigger turbo to handle any setting above 3x3 on my Edge Comp. What I am most concerned about is lag time and smoke..... What are some thoughts about going to a HX35/40 turbo to get the better airflow and cooler EGT's, benefits, drawbacks, et cetera. I don't read much here about producing power with the Cummins without a lot of smoke....I would like a setup that I can run at somewhere around 350 hp without smoking out an intersection if I am not overly careful on the throttle.
Just so its clear....I have an 01 24 Valve 5 speed currently running an Edge Comp variable chip, K&N air intake, FASS, everything else stock. I like the results of running the Edge on 3x3, however if I could move enough air...I like the fuel economy of the 5x4 setting on the Edge. As it is, I treat the throttle like it is a raw egg, but the lag is great enough above the 3 setting that I blow too much black smoke. Not a problem on the highway, but in town, yuck.
Another thought, would a smarty be a better choice here? But back to the original can of worms, how to get more airflow and better spool time. Any thoughts would be great!

If you have smoke induced lag now, it'll be worse with the hybrid.
With a 5 speed and the ability to run a lower sublevel, you should be able to drive smoke free.
I can drive with NO SMOKE on any level with a tight converter, tall gears and taller than stock rubber. A bigger turbo will always spool slower. You can try a turbo with a better housing like a 57mm S300 or go up to a 62mm. But in either case, it'll spool slower than what you have now.

That's kind of what I was afraid of. How about twins? There has got to be a way to run these suckers at a descent HP without blowing smoke all over the place!
What about running parallel turbos? I know it would be a real project to fab the exhaust manifolds, but I have the welding skills to do it--if it would work.

You should be able to hear boost leaks.. sounds like a WOOSH sounds when your at higher boost levels.. I have noticed that with a larger turbo it is a lot smokier in the lower RPMs, I did see something about running 2 HX35s, it was in a dieselpower magazine.
I put a AFE Blade runner on my truck, this did help with spool up and its a lot more areodynamic than the stock intake manifold..

i have a hybrid and i am fueling very heavily,and there is almost no lag at all.before i put it on i smoked bad,now it's hard to get it to smoke.it also cooled me down by about 300*with a 14cm housing(which is what most 35's are i think)spool is not an issue.the huge exaust housings are where you get the lag at.or also way too much fuel down low.
