Default In tank pump 2002 cummins

Hello,
My 2002 Cummins has the in tank pump retro fit done but the person that did it left the old pump on the block there but not powered. I have thought about getting the aftermarket upgraded pump that goes in place of the stock unit on the block. I thought it would be OK even if I leave the pump in the tank. After all, the stock pump had to pull the fuel but now it would be supplied to it. I also think the old block mounted pump might be restricting some fuel. So far I dont feel that it is but I dont have a gauge to be sure. Anyway, I didnt think getting the upgraded block mounted pump and leaving the one in the tank would hurt anything as I dont plan on any HUGE HP gain upgrades.
Comments welcome, and yes, I am kind of new to the diesel world.
Kerry

You only have one pump. If its in the tank then you don't have a block mounted pump. If you go to a aftermarket pump you will have to use a drawstraw or a sump to get it working properly. Running through a "dead"/unplugged pump you are going to have a restriction in fuel flow.

I do have two pumps, the one someone left on the block and one in the tank.
I figured it need to be removed or replaced with an aftermarket upgrade pump. I was changing the starter when I noticed the fuel pump on the block was unplugged and there was another wire spliced into it going back to the tank. Now I guess I have to find a plate for it so I can remove the old block pump as they just left it there.
Could I just put an upgrade pump on the block and run both????
Thank for the info.

Run one or the other. You can unbolt the block mounted pump but leave the bracket. If you went with a dual filter setup you can bypass the whole factory fuel setup. But don't run 2 pumps unless you are running a electric/mechanical pump (Fuel Boss)

Running two electric pumps only gives you twice the chance of a failure with no benefit at all.
Every 24-valve should have a fuel pressure gauge, otherwise you have no idea if you're about to kill your injector pump.

We are ordering gauges this week and I need to find a bypass plate for the dead pump on the block. Next will be the FASS 150 I think, as this should service and future planned upgrades. After that is 5" Diamond Eye exhaust.

JUst pulled the trigger on the Fass 150 and the Quad as well.
