Default Aftermarket Automatic Transmission Question

So i just got my transmission in today from dave. I plan on installing it asap. But i have a few questions.

What did you do about your stock transmission cooler? Did you flush it? My stock transmission is slipping bad and has some nasty fluid. I don't want that going through my brand new transmission and lines.

Did you run a after market transmission cooler or retain the stock one?

And how much fluid is needed with the double deep pan and a new transmission? 14 or 16 quarts? Thanks..

ok when i got my tranny from Dave Goerend i flushed my lines with some cooler flush you can get from the parts store that screws onto the line. the stock coolers retain alot of nasty clutch material. i also added an aftermarket one under the cab with a fan mounted to it blowing air through the cooler before the fluid goes back into the tranny. this was for my own feeling of protection to protect my big investment. i had a mag-hytec single deep pan on mine.

with the completely dry converter and coolers it took 19qts to get my stick to read dead on the full mark. also i would recomend using ATF+4 full synthetic since it is going to be all new and it will protect better as it has a few more aditives in there. a double deep pan should take a couple more quarts than mine did.

i hope this helps

Benjamin thanks for your input on this. I am pretty confident in the stock cooler from what others have told me. What did you do to mount the aftermarket cooler? Did you just use rubber line and splice into the stock aluminum line?

i know that 99% of the parts stores have no clue what the tranny flush is. in my local Advance Autoparts Store it is in the back with the commercial sales person. he has it right in front of his counter.

also i used Valvoline ATF+4 Full Synthetic. Autozone stocks it Advance dosen't. it's $4.99 a quart and to me worth every penny.

in most cases the stock cooler is more than adequate. in mine after monitoring the tranny temps and discussing this in depth with Dave I needed an extra cooler. i mounted it to the transmission crossmember and made brackets that gave it support to a brace going across the top of the frame. i cut the stock line going back into the tranny, flared it and attached brass barbed fittings to the lines, then used the line in the kit that the cooler came in to connect it that way. i noticed a good 35* drop in temp off the bat. i was normally running 210-220 in the pan before the extra cooler was installed. now i see 180-190* normally running around town, 170-180 on the highway. this is at 80-90* ambient temps. in cooler wether i've seen 140-150* temps towing in 60-65*ambient temps with the fan on but within 5 miles of turning the fan off the temp goes back to 180-190*

thanks for your input again. What exactly do you do with your truck that you need a extra cooler?

raise excessive hell.....

i dono really and it baffeled Dave that at times the fluid coming back into the pan was hotter than the engine coolant. i've used temp guns to verify that my gauge works. when i tow i tow a car or SUV on an open trailer, or i tow my buds 48ft tripple axle car hauler. i never see any big increases like i would expect. most of my increase is in stop and go driving. and when i drive empty i don't give her any slack......

hmm maybe i will pickup a temp gauge too. I beat the hell out of my truck. I mean that's what i bought it for.

I tow my turbocharged ford ranger to the local 1/8th mile and 1/4mile drag strips and haul 4-wheelers and stuff. But it's mainly a dd/toy.
