i just rebuilt my engine and im gonna warn you that you will prolly spend more then you anticipate. gasket here and there and better parts and it starts to add up quick. serious. i did all the work except i had a machine shop do their thing and they also assembled the short block. i didnt spend money on "power" type things just important supporting mods i guess you could say. Had my engine balanced and a nice colt cam. New head that got a P&P and o-ringed. did some pump work and different things and i prolly ended up spending 8,000. But it was all so worth it cus it runs amazing. if your gonna do it do it right and put money into it and expect it to cost more then you think. you can put money into it and have it amazing or low-ball yourself and have it average its up to you. You could prolly do it in the 5,000 range if you wanted to but i wouldnt.

i may have come in to this a little late at my shop a 5.9 goes between $5000 and $6000 depending on what problems it came in with. price changes with the parts you get there are some decent aftermarket places to get parts from. oem cummins parts are very expensive. right now im building a 5.9 to hold up to 700hp and i have roughly $5000 into it. now thats with no labor and parts at cost. which can be from 15 to 30% cheaper then what customers get it. not to mention the billet cam studs ect. to the guy with the "factory trained techs" you would never have cummins or 99% of the dodge dealers around here work on your truck. unless you want a huge bill and substandard work.
