The stand alone has variable adjustment parameters to set up the VGT. From what i was told, you can dial it in for any engine around the same CID.

No you cant. Since they tie into a MAP sensor, tps input, and some sort of engine speed pickup they have to be designed for different trucks.

I've seen a spring and a soleinod used very well to control the vgt. the spring works just like a wastegate while the soleinod just works off an on off switch.
