Should be thinking about a tranny upgrade before anything. A turbo wont destroy your bank like a tranny will when you need a new one. Save a lot of money upgrade your tranny and not have to worry about it later. Then start looking into turbos that will fit your needs and budget for the time being. Deciding what turbo to get is hard because what will work for you now might not work down the road. Even if you are done adding more go fast things to your truck. You could take up a new hobby or job that will require you to tow heavy loads new turbo time. I love my truck and everything about diesels but its never ending. Always changing things up adding more go fast parts its a virus of the worst or best kind. Sorry for the long response to a simple question had a little extra time on my hands.

Look into a Super Phat Shaft 62 from Industrial Injections. I ran one on my 03 Cummins for years and loved it. When I upgraded to my current Silver 66 I sold it to my buddy Darren for his 96 12 valve. He has been running it for 3 years now and he loves it. It spools like a stock turbo but runs much cooler. It also doesn't surge with his auto tranny which is always nice.

I'm not a parts cheer leader but I have had a lot of turbos over the years and that was by far one of the best I ever had. Industrial's turbos will stand up to a lot of abuse!

HE has a fuel plate, stock injectors balanced and shimmed, AFC housing is tweaked and a cold air intake. Nothing really crazy.
