Default installing head studs...NEED HELP!

alright.....i blew the crappy stock headgasket on my '98 and I plan on putting a .20 over marine headgasket and some 12mm arp head studs in this weekend or next....i cant stand driving the gasser...haha

I know you can take the head off w/o taking the motor out by removing the wiper cowl stuff. THE QUESTION: Can you re-install the head back on w/ the studs in place? I know i've got to bottom tap the holes, but will there be enough clearance on the back side to put the head back on??????

How much does the head actually weigh? around 120lbs??

THANKS GUYS!

u dont have to remove the wiper cowl stuff u mentioned, but there is 2 rubber plugs in the bottom side that pull out. u remove them so u can get the push rods out. then u remove the bolts and lift the head off. to reinstall, u will put the head back on, then insrt the studs through the head.

you will not be able to put all the studs in then set the head on, and the head is around 100lbs if I remember right

the head is pretty heavy its not a one man job unless your like me and use an engine crane to move it makes life easy. what I did was use the shorter ones where i could to hlep line it up the drop the longer ones in once the head was on.

short ones go on the intake side long on exhaust side.. as mentioned above theres a dowel pin at the front and back on the block.. there is no need to insert any studs before dropping the head on..make sure u get all the liquids cleaned out of the cylinders that leaks into them... maybe give them studs a few extra ft/lbs..and be careful.. dont scratch or rip the gasket.. u got your work cut out for ya.. i found it a lot easier to take the hood off too..

cool.....yeah ive been thinking of just taking the hood off. its not hard and I think it would be a LOT more "roomier" when taking that beast out.

Tell me more about this liquid you said to clean out of the cylinders.

I found this write-up on the DTR website......let me know if its worth following

Sorry that wasnt very clear at all.. when u pull the head you will have anti-freeze and oil get in ur cylinder and sit on your piston.. make sure u get it cleaned up before re-install..
